The Staggering Diabetes Numbers!
Diabetes has become one of the world’s fastest growing health crises. According to the CDC, over 38 million adults in the US have diabetes as of 2021. Worldwide, the number of diabetes cases is about 830 million according to a recent WHO report .
Most of these cases are Type 2 diabetes, which is largely preventable and manageable with lifestyle changes. Many people remain undiagnosed or untreated, especially in low and middle income countries. Untreated diabetes leads to persistently high blood sugar, which silently damages organs over time. Consequences include: Heart disease and stroke, Kidney failure, Vision loss, Nerve damage and amputations, Increased infections and poor wound healing. For those who remain untreated: Risk of early disability and death is significantly higher. Quality of life declines due to pain, fatigue, and progressive complications. Healthcare costs rise sharply—often after irreversible damage occurs.

About diabetes
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a health condition that affects how the body uses sugar (glucose), which is the main source of energy. A hormone called insulin helps move sugar from blood into cells to be used for energy. With diabetes, the body either:
- Doesn’t make enough insulin, or
- Can’t use the insulin properly
This causes sugar to build up in the blood instead of going into cells, which can lead to serious health problems over time. There are two main types of diabetes:
- Type 1 diabetes – the body doesn’t make insulin at all.
- Type 2 diabetes – the body doesn’t use insulin well, and sometimes doesn’t make enough.
